EGF
Goldbio offers affordable, high quality proteins of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) family of proteins, which all contain a conserved peptide domain known as the EGF-like domain. The sequence of the EGF domain contains six cysteine residues that form three intramolecular disulfide bonds. These disulfide bridges create structural loops that are needed for EGF family members to bind with the ErbB tyrosine kinase receptors. EGF family proteins play important roles in cellular proliferation and differentiation, immune system responses, and apoptotic cell clearance. Unregulated or increased activity of many of the EGF family members and their receptors has been implicated in tumor formation.

The family is characterized by the presence of at least one “EGF-like domain” (characterized by the presence of three disulfide bonds, formed from 6 conserved cysteine residues) in their extracellular domain. EGF was originally discovered as an activity that induced early eyelid opening, incisor eruption, hair growth inhibition and stunting of growth when injected into newborn mice.
