Bacitrac99

Catalog ID Size Pricing
B-071-10 10 g $ 126.00

Description

Bacitrac99 is the most pure form of bacitracin available, and should be used for the most sensitive applications and on the most sensitive cell lines since any impurities that might cause inhibition of resistant cell lines have been removed. In general, our USP Grade bacitracin will not adversely affect your cells and is suitable for most experiments.

Bacitracin is a cyclic polypeptide antibiotic isolated from Bacillus subtilis. It is made up of a variety of antimicrobial peptide fractions including A, A1, B, B1, B2, C, D, E, F, G, and X. This standard grade product is a mixture of these fractions, with bacitracin A exhibiting the most potent antimicrobial activity. Bacitracins B1 and B2 exhibit about 90% of the antimicrobial activity of bacitracin A when together. Other forms of bacitracin have not been studied extensively, but may have negligible antimicrobial properties.

Bacitracin targets the cell wall of gram-positive organisms such as Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus. Bacitracin also functions as a useful tool to distinguish between group A and group B β-hemolytic Streptococcus species, which are susceptible and resistant, respectively.

Description

Tetrazolium red is used to visualize dehydrogenase enzyme activity. Initially, the tetrazolium solution is colorless but changes to red when it comes into contact with hydrogen. Tetrazolium red is used in a biochemical viability test for seeds. The test relies on dehydrogenase enzymes to release hydrogen ions, which subsequently reduce the colorless tetrazolium salt solution to a red compound called formazan. Living cells turn red while dead cells remain colorless.

Bialaphos, Sodium Salt

Catalog ID Size Pricing
B0178-100 100 mg $ 133.00
B0178-250 250 mg $ 316.00
B0178-500 500 mg $ 580.00

Description

Bialaphos is a tripeptide antibiotic that is used in transformation experiments of many species of plants that make use of the bar gene for selection. In corn, it is more effective than glufosinate. In wheat, bialaphos was the most reliable selection criteria used to identify bar transformed plants.

Once introduced into a nonresistant plant cell, bialaphos is hydrolyzed and converted to phosphinothricin through the phosphinothricin acetyl transferase enzyme. Phosphinothricin is toxic within plants, causing ammonia to build up, which inhibits glutamine synthetase.

This broad-spectrum herbicide also has effectiveness against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, as well as certain fungal plant pathogens.

Description

Bluo-Gal is used as an alternative to X-Gal, and produces a darker blue color. Bluo-Gal is hydrolyzed by β-galactosidase to produce a blue precipitate. This precipitate is insoluble in alcohol and xylenes, thus making it suitable for immunoblotting and immunocytochemical assays. Bacterial colonies containing active β-galactosidase produce blue colonies when grown on plates containing Bluo-Gal.

C-103-250 250 g $ 911.00

Description

Carbenicillin is a member of the penicillin β-lactam antibiotics. However, unlike most β-lactams, carbenicillin disodium is limited to primarily gram-negative bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and common enteric species. It can be used in selection protocols and is often preferred over ampicillin due to its increased stability. This allows for less contamination of unwanted bacterial colonies. In addition, carbenicillin has been used to regulate bacterial growth in plants, yielding low regeneration frequencies. It can be used in genetic transformation applications to select for AmpR transformed cells.

Description

Cefotaxime is a third generation, broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic effective against various gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. However, unlike many other cephalosporins, cefotaxime is not effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria. Cefotaxime is often used in Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformations to regulate bacterial growth. It has been shown to exhibit a synergistic effect with Vancomycin in certain conditions.

Description

Cefsulodin is a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic used as a selective agent in isolation media such as Yersinia Selective Agar, Columbia Blood Agar, Salmonella Chromogenic Agar, and CIN Agar. It is mildly effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, but exhibits greater efficacy against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
