FGF2 is a single-chain polypeptide growth factor that plays a significant role in wound healing, it is a potent inducer of angiogenesis and it is essential for the growth of many stem and progenitor cells. FGF2 shares a 55% amino acid residue identity with FGF1 and interacts with heparin sulfate with nanomolar affinity. It is a potent inducer of DNA synthesis in a variety of cell types. FGF2 activates mesenchymal splice variants of FGF receptors (c splice variants) and also activates FGF Receptor 1b, but has little activity against FGFR2b or FGFR3b. It is most closely associated with FGF1 (aFGF).

Basic fuchsin is a fluorescent dye composed of rosaniline, magenta II, pararosaniline and new fuschsine. Basic fuchsin staining is certified to use for the detection of acid-fast bacilli and is commonly used in the Ziehl Neelsen staining method.

This dye has also been shown to stain tubercle Bacillus and to compare E. coli and Aerobacter aerogenes.

BCIP is a white to off-white powder that is used as a substrate for visualization of alkaline phosphatase. The end product is insoluble and purple when used with nitroblue tetrazolium. This final product can be visually detected. BCIP is DMF soluble.

Benzalkonium chloride is a cationic detergent and member of the quaternary ammonium compounds. It is studied for its effect on epithelial conjunctival cells in vitro.

Benzamidine hydrochloride monohydrate is an aromatic amidine. It is used in protein extractions as a strong reversible inhibitor of serine proteases such as trypsin, thrombin, plasmin and other trypsin-like proteases. Compared to aprotinin, benzamidine is considered to be just as effective in preventing the degradation of glucogon.

Bergapten or 5-Methoxypsoralen is a linear 5-methoxyfurocoumarin with photosensitizing effects occurring as a natural metabolite in plants like anise and celery. Concentrated amounts are found in bergamot and other citrus essential oils, causing phototoxicity. Its photochemical properties have led to application as a photonic material, heptatoprotective agent and skin pharmaceutical. It manifests as a crystalline solid and is stable, combustible and incompatible with strong oxidizing agents.

Bergapten has been studied as an antitumor agent in cancer research. In combination with UV light irradiation, Bergapten has been used to manage diseases like psoriasis and vitiligo and can also inhibit hepatocellular carcinoma cell proliferation. As a selective potassium-channel blocker, it reduces K-permeability at nodes of Ranvier, possibly producing fasciculation and cramps. Exposure to the corrosive chemical has demonstrated negative effects on health including erythema, dermatitis, hyperpigmentation and epitheliomas.

BES is a zwitterionic buffering agent used in biochemistry and molecular biology that was first selected and described by Good et al. It is a bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amine buffer that is useful for a pH range of 6.4 – 7.8. It is soluble in water at 0°C up to 3.2M. Like most neutral, amine-based buffers, BES forms a complex with DNA. It interferes with reactions between DNA and restriction enzymes to a lesser extent than similar buffers with less substituted amine groups, such as Tris. This lack of interference occurs because steric hindrance of the protonated tertiary amine in BES shields the negative charge of DNA to a lesser extent than less substituted buffers. BES can be used in a buffered saline solution in the calcium phosphate mediated transfection of eukaryotic cells with plasmid DNA. BES also forms a complex with certain metals, including copper and cobalt. Though BES binds to coppers ions, it is still suitable for use with the bicinchoninic acid (BCA) assay. Diminished protein-induced color development can be accounted for or even eliminated by precipitating protein prior to reaction with bicinchoninic acid.

beta-D-Glucose pentaacetate is a sugar that can be used as a reagent in chemical synthesis. In pancreatic islets, the secretory response to L-leucine is increased by beta-D-Glucose pentaacetate, increasing insulin secretion in both diabetic and normal rats.

beta-D-Maltose octaacetate is a reagent used for chemical synthesis. It has been used in a binary mixture of beta-D-Maltose octaacetate and CO2 to create carbon dioxide-soluble polymers for petroleum engineering applications.

Bialaphos is a tripeptide antibiotic that is used in transformation experiments of many species of plants that make use of the bar gene for selection. In corn, it is more effective than glufosinate. In wheat, bialaphos was the most reliable selection criteria used to identify bar transformed plants.

Once introduced into a nonresistant plant cell, bialaphos is hydrolyzed and converted to phosphinothricin through the phosphinothricin acetyl transferase enzyme. Phosphinothricin is toxic within plants, causing ammonia to build up, which inhibits glutamine synthetase.

It is a zwitterionic, bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amine buffer that is useful for a pH range of 7.6 – 9.0. It is commonly used in protein crystallization, in the study of enzymatic reactions, and for electrophoresis. It is used in thin layer ion exchange chromatography for protein resolution, as well as a multiphasic buffer system for SDS-PAGE of proteins. It is soluble in water at 0°C up to 1.1 M. Bicine forms a complex with most common metals so stability constants and concentrations should be taken into consideration when choosing this buffer.

The hydrophilic polyethylene glycol (PEG) spacer arm of this reagent imparts water solubility that is transferred to the labeled molecule, thus reducing aggregation of labeled proteins stored in solution. The PEG spacer arm also gives the reagent a long and flexible connection to minimize steric hindrance involved with binding to avidin molecules.
