Sulfonamides

Sulfonamides are compounds that contain a sulfonyl group attached to an amine group. Often called sulfa (sulpha) drugs or sulfanilamides, this class was the first antibiotics discovered, and sulfur has natural antibiotic and antifungal traits. Sulfonamides are broad-spectrum antibiotics that inhibit folic acid synthesis by acting as a competitive inhibitor of dihydropteroate synthetase, an enzyme found in the folic acid synthesis pathway. Sulfonamides are bacteriostatic and inhibit the growth and multiplication of bacteria.
