Sulfonamides

Sulfonamides are compounds that contain a sulfonyl group attached to an amine group. Often called sulfa (sulpha) drugs or sulfanilamides, this class was the first antibiotics discovered, and sulfur has natural antibiotic and antifungal traits. Sulfonamides are broad-spectrum antibiotics that inhibit folic acid synthesis by acting as a competitive inhibitor of dihydropteroate synthetase, an enzyme found in the folic acid synthesis pathway. Sulfonamides are bacteriostatic and inhibit the growth and multiplication of bacteria.

S-720-50 50 g $ 528.00
S-720-100 100 g $ 846.00

Description

Sulfamethoxydiazin has a sulfamoyl functional group, classifying it as a sulfonamide. It functions as a long-acting antibiotic, anti-infective and renal agent in medicine. Chemically, sulfonamides competitively inhibit para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and dihydrofolic acid synthesis in prokaryotes; they prevent the enzymatic activity of dihydropteroate synthase.

Sulfmethocydiazin inhibits dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR). This counteractive function prevents productivity in Gram-positive and -negative microbes. Pharmaceutically, it has been used to counteract leprosy, urinary- and respiratory-tract infections in humans and animals.
