Description
Erythromycin Estolate is an esterified derivative of the macrolide antibiotic erythromycin formulated as the lauryl sulfate salt of propionyl erythromycin. Like erythromycin, it inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, making it active against many gram-positive bacteria as well as selected mycoplasma and other susceptible microorganisms.
Compared to erythromycin, erythromycin estolate has different physicochemical properties, including improved solubility in many organic solvents while remaining poorly soluble in water.
Erythromycin estolate is used in microbiological applications requiring erythromycin activity when compatibility with organic solvent-based formulations or preparation of concentrated non-aqueous stock solutions is preferred. It provides an alternative formulation of erythromycin for experimental protocols where the limited solubility of erythromycin base may be less suitable.
