Description
Oxytetracycline HCl is the hydrochloride salt of the tetracycline antibiotic oxytetracycline. It blocks bacterial protein synthesis through interaction with the 30S ribosomal subunit, preventing aminoacyl-tRNA binding and inhibiting translation in susceptible bacteria.
The hydrochloride form offers greater aqueous solubility than Oxytetracycline Dihydrate, making it particularly useful when solution preparation and antibiotic incorporation into research media are important considerations. Oxytetracycline HCl can be used for microbiological selection, bacterial growth inhibition, antimicrobial susceptibility studies, and research into tetracycline resistance. Concentrated aqueous solutions at neutral pH should be handled carefully because oxytetracycline may hydrolyze and precipitate under these conditions.
Oxytetracycline HCl is more soluble in aqueous solution than oxytetracycline dihydrate.
