Description
Sulbactam is a β-lactamase inhibitor used in microbiology and molecular biology research to protect susceptible β-lactam antibiotics from enzymatic degradation.
It irreversibly inhibits many β-lactamase enzymes, helping restore or enhance the activity of companion β-lactam antibiotics against bacteria that produce these resistance enzymes.
As the non-salt form, Sulbactam provides researchers with the parent compound for studies of β-lactamase activity, antibiotic resistance, and interactions between β-lactam antibiotics and their inhibitors.
It can also be combined experimentally with antibiotics such as ampicillin or cefoperazone and has applications in Agrobacterium-based plant research where control of bacterial growth and β-lactamase activity is important.
