Description
Thiamphenicol is a bacteriostatic antibiotic derived from chloramphenicol. It is effective against several gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and commonly used in researching protein synthesis and to select for chloramphenicol-resistant transformed cells or the bacterial CAT gene. It can be used against uncomplicated gonorrhea infections and chancroid.
Thiamphenicol functions by binding the 50s ribosomal subunit and inhibiting synthesis of proteins by blocking aminoacyl-tRNA from attaching to the A site. It works by the same mechanism as chloramphenicol, but is about three times as potent.
