4-Methylumbelliferyl caprylate is a fluorogenic substrate for esterase with C8 activity, yielding a blue fluorescent solution upon cleavage and is used for the identification of Salmonella spp. based on the detection of caprylate esterase.

4-Methylumbelliferyl-N- acetyl-β-D- galactoside is a fluorogenic substrate for N-acetyl-beta-D-galactosaminidase and can be used for the detection of Candida albicans.

4-Methylindole is an indole used as a reagent in chemical synthesis. It has been used in the synthesis of triazolobenzazepine derivatives, anti-cancer phosphonate analogs and color emitting or electroluminescent applications.

Lipase is an enzyme that assists in the hydrolysis of fats. They have a large role in digestion as well as dietary lipid transport.

Lysosomal acid lipase (LAL), in particular, is required for the hydrolysis of cholesterol esters which are then delivered into the lysosome. Deficiencies in LAL are primarily associated with two diseases: cholesteryl ester storage disease (CESD) and Wolman’s disease (WD). 4-Methylumbelliferyl palmitate has often been used as one of the lipase substrates in studies involving either of these diseases.

L-Lactic acid is the optically active form of lactic acid and has an (S) stereochemical arrangement. Animals produce L-Lactate, conjugate base of lactic acid, from pyruvate via lactate dehydrogenase in fermentation during normal metabolism and exercise. Lactic acid bacteria perform lactic acid fermentation, converting carbohydrates to lactic acid. In humans, lactic acid and its conjugate base are part of many biological processes from prenatal development to extracellular fluid surrounding neurons.

Lactic acid is used in food preparation to produce specific types of beer and other alcoholic beverages. When used in the colon it prevents gastrointestinal fermentation, and in an 8% cream has been used on photodamaged skin. Polylactic acid can be formed when two molecules of lactic acid are dehydrated and then catalyzed into a plastic that is both biodegradable and not derived from petrochemicals. It is also used by detergent manufacturers due to its anti-bacterial properties, and can be used to produce water-soluble lactates from otherwise insoluble active ingredients.

pSuperAgro® v4 was designed to include AcdS and GabT activity, driven by a single lac promotor, which both suppresses ethylene evolution and degrades gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) during co-cultivation. The combined suppression of ethylene and reduction of GABA significantly increases T-DNA transfer and increases transient and stable transformation frequencies in both tomato and grass plants.

AcdS activity is beneficial for higher callus induction frequency and suppresses callus browning phenomena. GabT activity decreases GABA content locally in plant cells and induces higher shoot regeneration, decreasing the number of cotyledons used for transformation and reducing the time and labor required for transformation. This plasmid has been shown to be efficacious in both Hardy Pampas Grass ( E. Ravennae) and Tomato plants (S. Lycopersicum).
