Glutathione has been covalently linked for use in affinity purification of glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and GST fusion proteins.

Glutathione, Oxidized (GSSG) is the oxidized version of the naturally occurring and very important detoxification agent glutathione (GSH). When used in vivo, GSSG will not remain oxidized, but rather be reduced back to GSH. A ratio of GSH to GSSG can be used to determine the level of oxidative stress that has occurred in cells. When a cell has higher levels of GSSG, then it can be implied that more oxidative stress has occurred within the cell.

Glycine has many applications. As an amino acid, it is found as a biological molecule in the central nervous system and has inhibitory effect, especially in the spinal cord, brainstem and retina; and is also a precursor to proteins. In eukaryotes it is an important precursor to porphyrins, and provides the C2N subunit of all purines. For the purposes of testing glycine is a significant component of some solutions used in SDS-PAGE protein analysis as a buffering agent and for removing labelling antibodies from Western Blot membranes. Glycine methyl ester is a reagent used in chemical synthesis, it can synthesize selenohydantoins when used in addition to isoselenocyanate.

Because of its charge properties and small size, glycine is commonly used as a counter-ion in SDS-PAGE applications to balance running buffer charge and electric field strength.

In other applications GCDC can be used to induce hepatocyte apoptosis and inhibit calcium phosphate precipitation in vitro. GCDC is also used in applications analyzing the damage done to DNA by other bile acids.

Glycocholic acid, sodium salt hydrate is an ionic biologic detergent formed through the conjugation of cholic acid with glycine. It is used to measure total bile acids through fluorometric and enzymatic assays. Additionally, it is used to study its effect on testosterone micelle formation and solubilization.
