It is effective against several gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and commonly used in researching protein synthesis and to select for chloramphenicol-resistant transformed cells or the bacterial CAT gene.

Florfenicol, like chloramphenicol, is a bacteriostatic antibiotic and an analog of thiamphenicol. It targets gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, especially those responsible for bovine respiratory infections. Florfenicol is soluble in water and lipid solvents.

Thiamphenicol is a bacteriostatic antibiotic derived from chloramphenicol. It is effective against several gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and commonly used in researching protein synthesis and to select for chloramphenicol-resistant transformed cells or the bacterial CAT gene. It can be used against uncomplicated gonorrhea infections and chancroid.
