It irreversibly inactivates β-lactamase enzymes, preventing them from degrading β-lactam antibiotics. Sulbactam has been used in combination with ampicillin and cefoperazone to inhibit β-lactamase enzymes during Agrobacterium-mediated plant genetic modifications.
