Isoxanthohumol is a prenylflavonoid compound extracted from Humulus lupulus L., the common hop plant. It has displayed strong estrogenic effects and has been used for anti-cancer research. Isoxanthohumol has also been shown to form the potent phytoestrogen 8-prenylnaringenin (8PN), which forms by cleaving off an ether group.

Oncology research on Isoxanthohumol activity has shown a significant degree of efficacy against breast, prostate and colon cancer cell lines. It has also been to shown to attenuate transforming growth factor-β (TGF-1 β) expression and disrupt Janus kinase/ signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) pathways which activate oncogenic genes.

Itraconazole is a triazole antifungal agent used to increase fungal cell membrane permeability by inhibiting ergosterol synthesis, ultimately leading to fungal cell death. Itraconazole is effective against Blastomyces, Histoplasma, and Aspergillus species. It is used to study Candida infections in mice and to study proliferative changes in diabetic rats. Additionally, itraconazole is a hedgehog signaling inhibitor and CYP3A4 inhibitor.

Ixazomib citrate is a citrate salt that is a second generation proteasome inhibitor used for anti-cancer research. In vivo research has shown ixazomib citrate to hydrolyze into its active ixazomib form which reversibly inhibits 20S proteasomes in multiple myeloma cancer cells. Ceasing this enzyme’s activity has been shown to decrease angiogenesis, induce apoptotic pathways and upregulate tumor suppressor genes.

Kasugamycin HCl is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to combat yeast and pathogenic fungi such as M. grisea. It has been isolated from Streptomyces kasugaensis. Kasugamycin has been used to prevent and treat M. grisea mycelia formation in rice and against parasitic infections of plants such as leaf spot or apple scab. It is the antibiotic of choice in many infections due to its low phytotoxicity. Additionally, kasugamycin has been used to study ribosome structure and kasugamycin resistance.

Kinetin is a plant hormone that promotes cell division. It is part of a group of hormones called cytokinins.

The plant hormones cytokinins (CKs) comprise a class of growth regulators involved in the stress response, senescence, photosynthesis, nutrient assimilation and mobilization, as well as modulation of a plant tissue’s ability to act as a sink or source of metabolites.

CKs are recognized by a subset of sensor histidine kinases (HKs) and the signal is transmitted to the nucleus via a multistep phosphorelay (MSP), thus activating the expression of target genes.

KIT Ligand (KITLG), also called Stem Cell Factor (SCF) which binds to the c-Kit receptor is produced by fibroblasts and endothelial cells. The soluble and transmembrane forms of the protein are formed by alternative splicing of the same RNA transcript and the presence of both soluble and transmembrane SCF is required for normal hematopoietic function. SCF plays an important role in hematopoiesis, spermatogenesis and melanogenesis and it promotes mast cell adhesion, migration, proliferation, and survival. Soluble canine SCF shares 76-93% amino acid sequence identity with many other species, including human, mouse, rat and equine. Cells known to express SCF include endothelial cells, fibroblasts and keratinocytes.

C-kit ligand, the recently identified ligand for the kit tyrosine kinase receptor, is mapped to the mouse S1 locus. In vitro and in vivo KITLG can stimulate the proliferation of mature, as well as the proliferation and maturation of immature mast cells. KITLG acts in a synergistic manner on purified primitive human and mouse hematopoietic precursors, with various growth factors (such as IL1, IL3, IL6, IL7 and Epo,) to induce myeloid, erythroid and lymphoid lineage colony formation. The finding that KITLG is also expressed in the nervous system suggests a possible role for KITLG in the development of the nervous system.
