Bialaphos is a tripeptide antibiotic that is used in transformation experiments of many species of plants that make use of the bar gene for selection. In corn, it is more effective than glufosinate. In wheat, bialaphos was the most reliable selection criteria used to identify bar transformed plants.
Once introduced into a nonresistant plant cell, bialaphos is hydrolyzed and converted to phosphinothricin through the phosphinothricin acetyl transferase enzyme. Phosphinothricin is toxic within plants, causing ammonia to build up, which inhibits glutamine synthetase.
This broad-spectrum herbicide also has effectiveness against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, as well as certain fungal plant pathogens.

Bicine is a buffering agent used in biochemistry and molecular biology that was selected and described by Good et al. It is a zwitterionic, bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amine buffer that is useful for a pH range of 7.6 – 9.0. It is commonly used in protein crystallization, in the study of enzymatic reactions, and for electrophoresis. It is used in thin layer ion exchange chromatography for protein resolution, as well as a multiphasic buffer system for SDS-PAGE of proteins. It is soluble in water at 0°C up to 1.1 M. Bicine forms a complex with most common metals so stability constants and concentrations should be taken into consideration when choosing this buffer.

Biotin‐PEG4‐NHS Ester is a pegylated, highly hydrophilic biotinylation reagent for simple and efficient biotin labeling of antibodies, proteins and other primary amine-containing biomolecules.
Biotin‐PEG4‐NHS Ester reacts specifically and efficiently with primary amines (e.g., side chain of lysine residues or aminosilane-coated surfaces) at pH 7-9 to form covalent bonds. The hydrophilic polyethylene glycol (PEG) spacer arm of this reagent imparts water solubility that is transferred to the labeled molecule, thus reducing aggregation of labeled proteins stored in solution. The PEG spacer arm also gives the reagent a long and flexible connection to minimize steric hindrance involved with binding to avidin molecules.
