ACES is a zwitterionic buffering agent used in biochemistry and molecular biology that was first selected and described by Good et al. It is an acetamido buffer that is useful for a pH range of 6.1 – 7.5. ACES is used as buffering component in cell culture media, in both agarose and polyacrylamide electrophoresis, and in isoelectric focusing of proteins. ACES forms a complex with most common metals and formation constants should be taken into account when using this buffer in a solution containing metal ions. ACES absorbs UV light at 230 nm.

Adenosine-5'-monophosphate (AMP) plays an important role in cellular metabolic processes as it is a precursor to adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP).

The phosphate in AMP can be correlated with ATP and ADP. AMP contains only one phosphate group attached at the 5’ position, whereas ATP consists of three phosphate groups attached in series to the 5’carbon location, and ADP contains two phosphate groups attached to the 5’ position. AMP can also have an activating effect on a class of protein kinases known as AMP-activated protein kinases, or AMPKs.

Imazapyr is imidazolinone family herbicide that has been used to research herbicidal resistances and biochemical pathways in an array of plants. This compound has been shown to uncompetitively inhibit acetolactate synthase (ALS) which catalyzes the production of the amino acids valine, leucine and isoleucine. Loss of these specific amino acids depletes physiologically important proteins and enzymes, eventually resulting in cell death.

Polymyxin B sulfate is a polypeptide antibiotic mixture of B1, B2, and B3 polymyxins. Each of these fractions vary by a fatty acid group and exhibit marginal MIC differences when compared. Polymyxin B is most effective against gram-negative bacteria. It has been shown to work against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas viridiflava, and Erwinia carotovora. Polymyxin B is freely soluble in aqueous solution.

Streptomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic primarily effective against gram-negative bacteria and Mycobacterium species. It is commonly used in cell culture media to prevent bacterial contamination. It has also been used to precipitate nucleic acids during protein purification techniques and to study mechanisms of Streptomycin resistance.
