Description

Abscisic Acid is a naturally occuring plant hormone involved in plant growth and stress response. It is produced partially via the mevalonic pathway in chloroplasts and other plastids. The production of ABA is accentuated by stress, including water loss or freezing temperatures. The activation of ABA can occur by one of two methods: 1) an ABA-glucose ester can form by attachment of glucose to ABA, or 2) the oxidation of ABA can occur to form phaseic acid and dihyhdrophaseic acid.

The transport of ABA can occur in both xylem and phloem tissues, and it can also be translocated through paranchyma cells. Some functions of ABA include stimulating the closure of stomata, Inhibition of shoot growth, induction of seeds to synthesize storage proteins, inhibition of the effect of gibberellins and the induction of gene transcription in response to wounding (especially for proteinase inhibitors).

Description

P-aminophenyl phosphate (pAPP) can be used as a substrate for alkaline phosphatase enzymatic reactions in order to electrochemically quantify ALP activity.

The enzymatic reaction results in the production of phenol, which can be quantified and used to analyze ALP concentrations.

ALP is a naturally occurring enzyme and can be found in human tissue in the liver, bone and intestines. Usual concentrations of ALP range between 25-100 IU/L. A significant spike outside of that range could act as a signal for many diseases.

Description

Agarose is a very inert polysaccharide that forms hydrophilic and high gel strength gels at low concentrations.
Agarose beads are microspheres of agarose gels with different particle diameters and concentrations. Small spherical particles of agarose act as a porous gel to filter or separate a mixture of molecules according to their individual sizes. Due to its chemical structure (easy to activate), the agarose beads may be prepared to bind biomolecules in a reversible or irreversible manner. Cross-linked agarose beads are used in gel filtration chromatography (or molecular exclusion chromatography) as well as for activating beads for biomolecule purification or immobilization.
Cross-linked agarose beads can also be used for activating processes, generating active groups inside its pores capable of reversible or irreversible biomolecule bonds. Due to the bead’s large internal surface and to its composition (inert polysaccharide), agarose is an ideal medium for the preparation of activated beads.
